A pre-prepared fabric strip of the appropriate width is fed into the bias tape maker. The tool folds the edges of the fabric strip inwards, and the folds are then secured by ironing. This semi-finished bias tape is easier and more efficient to use for home sewing projects.

Narrower bias tape makers (6 mm and 12 mm) are used to prepare fabric strips that are sewn onto the surface of the fabric. Such strips are commonly used in patchwork techniques, including stained-glass and Irish-style patchwork.
